The world nowadays faces many problems because human populations have not actively preserving the nature. For instance Jakarta and some parts of Indonesia have annual flood seasons due to choked sewer lines but the solution hasn’t been found. Personally, the author believes that it is a calling for well-educated students and graduates from universities, to be directly involved in creating a society that is environment friendly. And this, is a mandate especially for those belongs to Christian Universities as it is stated on the Scripture that Adam is being put in Eden to cultivate it and as such the descendants of Adam should do the same thing to the world.
There are three ways where the members of the university could answer this calling, by initiating, inventing, and inspiring. The most important of all three is initiating. There must be someone who can be a trigger for the people in order to be caring towards the environment. It takes an agent of change in order to implement it. Young people, with their boundless energy, would be suited to play this role.
Secondly, the students and graduates, as educated people with access to various form of knowledge should think about resolving the environmental issue within their scope of learning. The university could contribute by providing academic education and moral support, so they could gather enough knowledge and skill. For example, as a mechanical engineering student of Petra Christian University, author has been sufficiently equipped to create machines that recycle husk into briquette that could be used as a source of energy.
Last but not least, students and graduates from Christian Universities should inspire others in order to work towards the utopian society. The simplest yet the hardest way to do this is by leading through example. This can be achieved by keeping their integrity and working hard to nurture the environment.
In conclusion, young and educated people, educated in Christian University, would have the capability of being the catalyst for the implementation of sustainable society. As members of minority group in Indonesia, their actions would always be under the spotlight and only if they can initiate, invent and inspire, they would be the agent of change for the society. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now, it is time for us to preserve it in honor of our Creator.
